So after spending an unplanned extra night in the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh due me having a really fun night chundering, we got the bus to Sihanoukville the next day. We headed to our hostel Monkey Republic and spent the evening with a group of English guys. We went down to the beach to look at the nightlife but had a relatively quiet night. Unfortunately it basically rained from the next morning until we left, with only a few breaks- not great for a beach resort! We spent the morning in a beach cafe on Serendipity beach and then Dave (Harriet's boyfriend for those who don't know!) arrived from India and we went to the nicer Otres beach for the afternoon (still raining)... We went out that night and spent the day hungover in various cafés the next day.. Basically there's not much to do in Sihanoukville in the rain, and it didn't look too pretty in the rain either, so no photos sorry!
On Thursday we got an early minibus to Kampot, a lovely town on the Kampot river, about 25km from the coast. We stayed at the Mad Monkey, which is the 3rd one of this Cambodian hostel chain. Finally it had stopped raining!
Next was the coastal village of Kep, which, is famous for its crab and seafood. We ate at a little restaurant next door to the crab market, where I had Red Snapper in Kampot pepper sauce, and I can honestly say it might be the best seafood I've ever eaten!
We spent the afternoon on Kep beach, but none of us had brought swimming stuff which was a little annoying! The statue of the white lady is supposed to be looking out towards Phu Quoc island, and 'waiting for the day the island is returned to Cambodia', as the Cambodians claim that the Vietnamese stole it.
Yesterday we crossed the border to Vietnam and got the ferry to the island of Phu Quoc. The weather yesterday was ok and we managed to spend some time on the beach. Annoyingly the rain has now set in and we're trying to get off the island and back to Ho Chi Minh sooner rather than later :(
We wandered round for the morning and went for a swim in the hostel pool before deciding to bite the bullet and rent mopeds (sorry mother!). As everyone seems to rent them here and we had Doove here to teach us, we decided the quiet roads of Kampot would be a good place to learn. Harriet went on the back of Dooves bike and I had my own, complete with Hello Kitty decoration.
Luckily nobody fell off, and it was so much fun! However we promise to get more substantial helmets next time!
We biked to some very unimpressive rapids and then went out for some food...
Then unfortunately Doove had to go to the Cambodian hospital-
Just kidding he just had to wear that when we went for a massage!
On the way home we had such a cool Tuk Tuk driver who let Harriet drive- pleased to report she didn't crash!
The next day we did a Tuk Tuk tour of the area, and the first stop was a Muslim fishing village
then we went to some caves, one of which had hundreds of bats in so that was pretty cool. The view from the top of the hill was also pretty good!
Next stop was the pepper plantation. Kampot is famous for its white, red, green and black peppercorns, and we can confirm they taste really good!
In the evening we went to this weird little cinema where you pick a film and they show it on a big TV and you eat homemade noodles and dumplings... Weird experience! We then went to a hippy bar for a few hours.
